The BRIBE
A young lawyer was defending a wealthy businessman in a complicatedlawsuit, and he feared that the case was not going well and thatthey would lose. And so the young lawyer asked a senior partner ofthe law firm whether it would be appropriate to send the judge inthe case an expensive box of cigars.“Absolutely not,” the senior partner said, appalled at what theyoung man was suggesting. “The judge is an honorable man, and I canguarantee that if you do that, you’ll lose the case.”A few weeks later the judge ruled in the favor of the younglawyer’s client. Upon congratulating the young man the seniorpartner said, “Aren’t you glad you didn’t send those cigars?”“But I did send them,” the young lawyer said with a twinkle in hiseye. “I just dropped in the plaintiff’s lawyer’s business card!”
